Backpacking is a term that has historically been used to denote a form of low-cost, independent international travel. Terms such as independent travel and/or budget travel are often used interchangeably with backpacking. The factors that traditionally differentiate backpacking from other forms of tourism include but are not limited to the following: use of public transport as a means of travel, preference of youth hostels to traditional hotels, length of the trip vs. conventional vacations, use of a backpack, an interest in meeting the locals as well as seeing the sights. The definition of a backpacker has evolved as travelers from different cultures and regions participate and will continue to do so, preventing an air-tight definition.

Backpacking is a popular way to travel around Tasmania. It allows you an almost unlimited level of flexibility with your itinerary and keeps costs to a minimum as opposed to staying at expensive hotels.

Your backpack

The size of the backpack you buy will depend on how long you are going to travel for, the types of activities you plans to undertake and the amount of gear you like to take with youon holidays. Iif you plan on taking only the bare essentials you could get away with a 35 litre backpack but on average a 50-60 litre backpack is a more realistic choice, especially as it will leave some room for anything collected along the way. Unless you plan to camp then typically you won't need anything bigger than a 70 litre pack.

One of the key issues when embarking on a backpacking trip is what to take with you noting that you will probably need to carry your backpack around for long periods of time and it must contain everything that you will need while you are away that can't be purchased locally.

It is essential to pack as lightly as possible, your backpack will need to be carried with you everywhere and having a large bulky pack can hamper you boarding buses and public transport and will also make you tired by carrying your backpack around all day
